What "Fire Damage" actually means in Copart and IAAI inventory

Copart and IAAI both code fire-damaged lots under broad tags ("BURN" or "FIRE" on Copart; "BURN-ENG" / "BURN-INT" / "BURN-TOTAL" on IAAI in many yards), but the underlying damage falls into four categorically different buckets. The bucket determines whether the car is rebuildable or scrap.

Engine-bay fire (electrical or fuel-line origin)

Most common fire category in salvage inventory. Triggered by an electrical short, a fuel-line leak, a turbocharger failure, or a recall-eligible defect (Hyundai/Kia 2.4L Theta II engine fires were a multi-year recall driver). Damage is concentrated under the hood — wiring loom melted, plastics deformed, paint blistered on the hood and front fenders. Cabin and rear of the vehicle often undamaged. Rebuild math: marginal but possible. Engine swap, harness replacement, hood and fender repaint typically run $4,500-$9,500 in independent-shop labor. The hidden risk is whether structural metal in the firewall and front strut towers absorbed enough heat to lose tensile strength — that's a frame-shop call, not a body-shop call, and it's the line between a rebuildable car and a non-repairable one.

Cabin fire (often arson or smoking-related)

Less common, more destructive. Triggered by an interior accelerant (cigarette in upholstery, intentional accelerant during arson) or an HVAC electrical fault. Damage is concentrated in the passenger compartment — seats melted, headliner destroyed, dashboard warped, all interior plastics compromised. Engine bay and exterior often visually intact.

Rebuild math: terrible. Full interior replacement on a modern car (seats, headliner, dash assembly, carpet, all door panels, all wiring downstream of the BCM) typically runs $8,000-$18,000 in parts alone, before labor. Total-loss fire (frame heat damage)

Rare and absolute. Triggered by a sustained fire that consumed enough of the vehicle that structural metal warped — frame rails, A/B/C pillars, rocker panels, suspension mounts. Often the vehicle burned to the ground after an engine-bay or cabin fire was left unattended. Visual identification: paint completely consumed across multiple panels, glass shattered or melted, tires destroyed, structural metal visibly warped.

Rebuild math: zero. These lots almost always carry parts-only or certificate-of-destruction tags rather than salvage. If you see a SALVAGE tag on a visibly burned-to-shell lot, the title brand is going to get downgraded at the next state inspection regardless of what the listing says.

Wildfire-zone vehicles (post-Camp Fire 2018, Maui 2023, LA Palisades 2025)

A specific subcategory of total-loss fire. Wildfire-destroyed vehicles often arrive at auction with a mix of structural fire damage, severe heat warping, and contamination from fire-retardant chemicals dropped during suppression. The Camp Fire (Paradise, CA, 2018), the Maui fires (Lahaina, 2023), and the LA Palisades fires (2025) each pushed thousands of fire-totaled vehicles through Copart and IAAI inventory in the months following.

Wildfire vehicles often carry geographic tags ("PARADISE CA", "LAHAINA HI", "PALISADES CA") in the lot description in addition to the fire damage code. The contamination layer makes them harder to assess than ordinary fire damage — the chemicals can mask underlying corrosion that won't surface for 2-3 years. What "Theft Recovery" actually means

"Theft Recovered" or "Theft Recovery" on a lot card means the vehicle was reported stolen, then recovered by law enforcement or a private recovery service, then sent to auction. The damage range across theft-recovery lots is enormous — from a car with no damage at all (rare, but it happens) to a stripped shell with no drivetrain. Stripped recovery (wheels, audio, catalytic converter gone)

The most expensive theft-recovery scenario. The car was stolen for parts, stripped at a chop shop, and the shell dumped or recovered. Wheels, tires, audio system, navigation head unit, catalytic converter (almost always — cats get cut for the rare-metal content), and frequently the seats, airbag modules, and ECU are gone. Drivetrain may also be gone if the chop shop targeted the engine and transmission.

Rebuild math: depends on what's missing. Wheels and cats are easy replacements in the $1,500-$3,500 range. Stripped airbag modules and ECU push past $5,000 quickly because they require dealer-level programming. A fully stripped shell isn't a rebuild project — it's parts and a chassis number.

Joyride recovery (cosmetic damage, drivetrain abuse, no parts missing)

The most common theft-recovery scenario. The car was stolen, driven hard for a few hours or days, and recovered intact (often by police pursuit, sometimes abandoned). Damage is typically cosmetic: scraped panels, broken side glass, peeled steering column trim where the thief defeated the ignition lock, sometimes interior smoke or food-debris damage. Drivetrain often abused but usually functional — suspension, brakes, and tires take the brunt.

Rebuild math: legitimately good. A clean-running joyride recovery at $7,500-$11,000 against a clean-title comp of $14,000-$18,000 is the kind of deal where theft-recovery actually delivers. Insurance-wait recovery (recovered after the carrier paid out)

The car was stolen, the insurance carrier paid out the policyholder, the carrier took title to the (still-missing) vehicle, then the car was recovered weeks or months later. The carrier owns it and sends it to salvage auction to recover residual value. Damage profile depends entirely on what happened during the missing-vehicle window — sometimes the car was sitting in a tow yard and is essentially undamaged, sometimes it was driven across the country and arrived in Texas after being stolen in New Jersey.

Rebuild math: variable, but often the best value in theft-recovery inventory because the carrier is selling at a "we already got our money" price. VIN-cloning recovery flag (rare but serious)

A small subset of theft-recovery lots arrive at auction with evidence that the original VIN plate, dashboard VIN, or door-jamb VIN was tampered with — often because the thief or chop shop attempted to clone the VIN onto a different chassis to mask the theft. Theft recovery — joyride variant can be a real bargain

Joyride-recovery lots are one of the few salvage categories where a careful buyer regularly outperforms the discount. The damage is mostly visible, the rebuild scope is well-bounded, and the title brand follows a predictable salvage → rebuilt path. A clean-running joyride recovery at 60-70% of clean-title retail, after a $1,500-$3,000 cosmetic repair and a state inspection, often resells at 80-85% of clean-title retail — net positive on the rebuild cycle.

Stripped recoveries and insurance-wait recoveries are more variable. Stripped lots are parts-or-scrap unless the missing components are specifically cheap to replace on that model. How to verify a specific lot's damage code

Three steps. 90 seconds per lot.

Step 1 — Read both primary and secondary damage codes on the lot card. Copart shows them as "Primary Damage" and "Secondary Damage" lines on the lot summary. IAAI shows them as "Damage" and "Secondary Damage." If both lines have entries, both apply — and the secondary code often carries more weight than the primary in determining rebuild risk. A "MINOR DENT/SCRATCH" primary with a "BURN" secondary is dominantly a fire-damage lot.

Step 2 — Cross-reference with the photo set, especially undercarriage and engine bay. Both auctions provide standardized photo sets (Copart usually 8-18 photos, IAAI 6-15). For fire damage, look at engine bay, firewall, wheel wells, and underside for heat warping. For theft recovery, check wheels, ignition column, doorjambs, and seat-belt anchor points (chop shops sometimes cut belts).
